A Winter Night’s Final Serenade

Michael G. O´Connor

The world in still slumber
‘Neath hushed silent glow
Of the pale midnight moon
On soft dusting of snow.
While the cold, as a noose,
Chokes off my breath
My heart slowing in pain
At the hour of death.
No song in the night
Would accompany me
Only silence of a distant
Dissolving memory
Where loving was new,
A Spring everlasting,
Yet I, caught unaware
Of Autumn’s quick passing.
The notes from my essence
Together in song
Retreat through the breeze
And wander along,
Alone in the night
With callous release
In desperate search
Of a forgiving peace.
